How to choose the Perfect Sofa for your Space

Author: Erin Irwin - Designs West Sales Associate & Flagstaff, AZ Realtor

Whether you are replacing your old college couch, looking for an upgrade, or just needing a refresh; picking the perfect couch for your space can be a daunting task. We have a few tips and and tricks to make the decision easy and seamless.

A few key first steps will help you tremendously before you hit the store in search of your new couch.

  1. Measure your space

    1. Before you look at photos online or head to the store, go grab your trusty tape measure and take all measurements for the space your new couch will call home. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 18 inches of space on either side of the couch.

  2. Make sure it fits YOU

    1. While the size of the space is important, it is also important to consider your own dimensions. If you are a very tall person, a couch that sits low to the ground or has a very low back may not be the best fit for you personally, even though it may fit the space beautifully. Sofas come in different seat depths as well so that is something to pay attention to!

  3. Fake the Look!

    1. Once you know your ideal couch dimensions, fake the look before shopping. An easy way to do this is to lay down painters tape on the floor with the dimensions of the sofa or sectional you are considering, or contact our designer here at the store. This easy step can help you visualize the couch in your space.

Create a Budget

Your next big step, which is just as important as your measurements, is to determine your budget. Couches come in a wide variety of price ranges. Some things to consider when determining a budget can include material, users such as pets or children, and how long you plan to use your new couch. If you are hoping to have your couch for years, you will definitely want to consider a sturdier couch with higher end materials and sturdier fabric or leather options. In the couch world, you definitely get what you pay for, a $2500 couch will hold up better over the long term than a $1000 couch.

Let it Flow

Another big factor that many couch shoppers tend to overlook is considering the flow of the room as well as factoring in existing furniture and pre-existing features such as windows, fireplaces, and built in units. Follow the natural flow of the room, don’t block doorways or main traffic foot paths. If you have a large open concept living space, sectionals are great at helping to define the space and provide separation. At Designs West, we find it extremely helpful when shoppers bring in a photograph of their space as well as existing furniture and home features. This helps us visualize your space and allows us to give more tailored suggestions for how to incorporate a couch into your room.

How & Where?

The last big step is to consider how you want to use your new couch. Will this be in a formal sitting room, or will the couch be going into a high use family room? Do you prefer to be sitting upright on the couch, or are you a laid back lounger? We have shoppers come in with a variety of physical ailments that require them to have special needs such as more supportive cushions, firm back cushions, more upright seating position, etc. If you have specific requests, make sure to tell us, we want to help you find the right fit for your home and your body’s needs! A variety of cushions can help us tailor a couch to your specific needs; down cushions for example, are perfect for your kicked back lounging couch. Many couches now also have options of standard seat depth of deeper seat depth.
